You live in South Florida, your Jewish, you most
likely emigrated from that far away land called New York [or some
place close], and everyone thinks you ARE a Democrat. Yet it is the
very ideology and path that makes up the history of modern day
Democrats which cries out for Jews of all walks of life in this
country to be counted as a significant voice in the Republican Party;
and thus, loyal Americans.
For me, it was the beginning of the
1970s and I was a Democrat. Not born to it nor by family mandate, but
finding my way through the tutelage of a political candidate; it was
karma. As a near twenty-four hour aid and companion to Ms. Karen
Burstein, a Democratic Congressional Candidate, I was shown first hand
the tenacity, the determination, and the ethics of one who truly
sought to serve in public office for all the right reasons. She
represented forward thinking views, but more importantly she put forth
plausible answers to tough questions: something few Democrats have
shown me over the many years I have watched and participated in what I
like to consider good citizenship. My activity in Democratic
politics, before I even graduated from college, included being an
elected Democratic Committeeman more than thirty years ago and being
the youngest person ever nominated to run for the Chairmanship of the
Democratic Party in Nassau County New York. Thank G-d years later I
learned that political parties for me, must be willing to be
inclusive, seek answers, and have a personal responsibility and not
merely complain; this before my own two candidacies for the House of
Representatives [NY 5] in 88 & 90.
Many North East Jews migrate each
year from around the globe to South Florida for retirement, a better
living, or just to be around the family. However, this population
seems determined to continue voting Democratic because they are
supposed to...and because we always did . A hallmark of my home
growing up; two parents who loved my sister and me, fostered
independent thought, honored each other with respect, and taught us
those qualities. It was not the party but the people that were
important. It was always about the effort and personal responsibility.
I would change my political party
affiliation in 1980. When, long after law school, my experience as a
Senior Educator at the Collegiate Level here in the State of Florida,
and working in the marketplace in a variety of jobs, I came to the GOP
coincidently, with the great communicator; President Ronald Wilson
Regan, albeit with a lot less fanfare.
It was not the influence of that
actor from California, but more the years being observant of both
political parties, that it became painfully apparent to me that the
Democratic Party although steeped in ideology, often and
consistently had no real answers. I found myself politically
lost. Fiscally conservative yet socially liberal, I found that I was
either a Conservative Democratic or a Liberal Republican; and I
was tired of not being heard. I believed then and as I do now
in a womans right to choose, except in late term abortion. I believe
in people. I believe in a government working for the people and taking
less from them. I believe in less government spending, not more
pork. I believe most importantly in personal responsibility. I found
little then, and especially in our most difficult of times now, any
real personal responsibility on the part of the so called elected
Democratic Leadership; or even the Democratic Party itself. What I
find are mean spirited and often racially abusive practices. Uncaring
about national security issues, all the loyal opposition can do is
criticize the President and those who serve our country; with no
productive answers of their own. For me this is a more than 30
history of the same ole thing from the same ole party. I find this,
in these times of strife and danger at home and abroad, anti-American
and shameful. Lip service from the Democratic presidential wannabees,
especially those who have long been in office, is a prime reason for
any member of the Democratic Party to register Republican.
In my own Congressional District
spanning Palm Beach County, Congressman Wexler has in an as yet to be
published exclusive interview to this columnist, gave possibly the
worst reason to be in a political party. When asked why [he] was a
Democratic he told me that ...I was born a Democrat and Ill die a
Democrat.... This was his only rationale for being a Democrat in his
entire life. How very sad; for him and those he represents including
myself. If Congressman Wexler had given concrete answers as to why he
was a Democrat, that he believed in fiscal responsibility in any form
other than big tax and spend, or other tenants that would relate
answers and/or solutions, and not just merely complain about the
problems, I would be more inclined to find him a fair and impartial
Representative. However, I find him absent much too often from the
district, only in touch with his constituency by a well oiled
political machine which runs his district offices. It would be nice
for him to remember his job is here, not 24/7 in Washington where he
has located his family, or flying around the world. What he does not
remember also is that, as our Congressman, we demand that he support
an active defense of the United States in all forms as well as the
Commander-in-Chief. If he disagrees as part of his constitutionally
protected right, and as part of his sworn duty, then do so with
suggestions and answers, not political rhetoric.
Jews must be smart Jews and smart
Americans. They will understand the need for a strong America now
unlike ever before. A strong United States likewise is a direct path
to the continued existence and support of our homeland in Israel.
We now live in an historically
different time than any of us ever thought we would see as we entered
the 21st century. The days of December 7th were
long passed and the world had its tyrants. However, we can never wipe
away the visuals many of us saw of 9/11; nor the horror that
accompanied it. WE MUST NOT FORGET: EVER ! We must be committed in
these most difficult times; and unfortunately the Democrat Party is
not. Never before has your choice in a political party been more
important. It is not only important to national security but quite
possibly to the future of the world.
