The Editorial Board of the JewishXpress has chosen Arnold Schwarzenegger as the endorsed candidate for Governor of California. Although we are based in Southeast Florida, our magazine reaches far and wide in print or on the Internet. It is the opinion of the Management of this magazine that we must take positions on candidates who seek many different offices and who can effect issues on Civil Rights, current American and world issues, and matters which are of significance to the support of Israel.
Arnold the man, came to this country more than three decades ago with virtually no money and only his self-determination and perseverance; much like Jews have done and emigrated all over the world. Although clearly impaired by accent, being foreign born, nothing dissuaded this son of American History. Through hard work he became world famous as a body builder, then one of the most successful motion picture actors of all time, and although a Republican politically in a �Hollywood Democratic� setting, married into what amounts to Democratic royalty. Going on to become a good father, role model for all, social activist with his wife and family, he donates nearly half his income many years to charity. While it is true he can afford this, with his more than successful and wealthy wife in her own right, the fact that he does not have to contribute either his time or his money, yet he does both !
He is, as a newcomer only to running for elected office, clearly the antithesis of political professionals such as Governor Grey Davis and Lt. Governor Bustemante. Neither of those seasoned �professionals� have shown either leadership or character. The fact that there is a recall in California at all is testament to the failure of the Governor and his staff. To vote for either Governor Grey Davis or his Lt. Governor, would be only to perpetuate a hollow leadership that has led California to the brink of bankruptcy.
His business expertise, his action in public referendums in California, his clear sense as a warm and compassionate human being who has done more than anyone else to elevate the Special Olympics to all our minds, and as well as for children who truly need that, is clearly beyond reproach.
Arnold, with his background and breath of fresh air; may be just the cure our largest state needs. We urge everyone to vote in this most important political race.
