On March 29, 2002, as world Jewry welcomed the Pesach holiday, Haim
Smadar was murdered along with 16 year old Rachel Levy in Jerusalem.
Haim Smadar, of blessed memory, was a 55 year old school security guard.
As school was on holiday vacation, Mr. Smadar was supplementing his
income by doing guard work at a Super Sol located in Jerusalem's Kiryat
Hayovel neighborhood. A genocidal bomber, a young Arab woman, came to
murder many on this busy shopping day. She murdered two (too many).
Dropped off at the Super Sol, the terrorist noticed several Arab women
out front of the store. In Arabic she told them to leave. Mr. Smadar,
born in Tunisia and understanding Arabic, immediately became suspicious.
He did not allow the terrorist to get past him. As reported all over
the Israeli press, Haim, who had once told his wife that
if a terrorist ever tried to attack the children at his school, he would
use his own body to protect them, did just that.
Haim Smadar lived and died keeping his word. With the courage of a lion,
he rose to extraordinary heights. Haim Smadar left behind a wife (Shoshana)
and 6 children - two hearing disabled. We all have an opportunity to
honor this brave man. The Israel Emergency Solidarity Fund aids victims
of Arab terrorism and their families. Locally, an arrangement has been
made to "adopt" the Smadar family. With the help of South
Floridian Bonnie Kleiman, representative of The Israel Emergency Solidarity
Fund, an area campaign has been put together for the Smadars.
