Phobia-fear; aversion; horror;. There are hundreds of phobias and millions of sufferers in the U.S. We are familiar with a few main phobias that can terrorize the life of many. Phobias can be specific, social or panic disorders, most of which can be treated by psychologists and therapists. Different conditions require different treatments, and without the right care, the phobia is unlikely to clear up. Almost everybody knows someone with a phobia or some panic disorder. Phobics are trying to ease their discomforts by avoidance, but the harder they work to avoid the things they fear, the more the brain signals that the threat is real. One treatment aims at reducing anxiety and fear. A hemophobic who is afraid of blood and syringes, will be shown pictures of blood, syringes and a blood bank, and gradually a real syringe and blood samples will be displayed to him. Over time the patient will learn to hold a syringe and eventually will have blood drawn from him. The phobia can be cured. Just as you and I can get used to the noise of traffic or background sounds, so can phobics become nonresponsive to the things that once frightened them. In Stockholm University, Sweden, psychologists are using a one-day phobia treatment. Dr. Lars Ost reports that 80 to 95% of the patients get their phobias under control after just one session. If therapies cannot help, drugs like Prozac, Luvox and Paxil that help produce feelings of satisfaction and reduce stress and anxiety can be taken. There are between 35-50 million Americans that suffer some form of a phobia, they mostly suffer from social phobias. Phobias Galore.
